Managing Arc Flash Risks

There are a number of steps to managing the risk associated with Arc Flash.

The first step is to identify there is risk and to start quantifying it. There are a number of methods that can be applied.

Determine the fault levels at each location. Options include, using an online calculator, getting a study completed, or using some guidelines.

\

Evaluate methods of managing risk that is not acceptable. Such as protection settings, replacement of equipment, additional protection or PPE, amongst others.

\

Implement measures to manage the risks at each location.

\

Ensure all details are documented and available for reference for all workers.

\

Provide training and ensure competency of all workers.

\

Manage any changes to ensure conditions do not change, and if they do, update results.

The most common method of calculating the arc flash level is IEEE 1584.
